Ealing Council's cabinet has moved forward with plans to revitalise the W13 Youth Centre in Ealing by appointing construction firm, Thomas Sinden Limited, to modernise and expand the site.
The centre on Churchfield Road, W13, received a £2 million redevelopment grant from central government last year after a successful bid by Ealing Council. The money will be spent on remodelling and refurbishing the existing building, transforming it into a hub for young people. Facilities will include a gym, a sports hall, a recording studio and a training kitchen.
It will also host a wide range of services such as activities for young people with additional needs, help with education and careers, sexual health services and family and school advice. Young people who use the W13 centre have been involved in developing the proposals.
Councillor Patricia Walker, cabinet member for Children and Young People said: “This is a really exciting project for Ealing. In these times of government cuts, I’m delighted that we’ve been able to secure this investment.
“Many of the services and activities delivered by the centre will be lifelines for local families, housing a range of youth support services and providing help, information and advice on a wide range of topics in a much improved environment. It will also be of huge benefit to the wider community by tackling some of the complex issues that teenagers face at home and school.”
Construction work is scheduled to start before the end of the year. The redeveloped centre is due to open its doors in September 2011.
The decision was made by the council’s Cabinet on Tuesday, 12 October. All Cabinet decisions are subject to call-in for a period of five working days from the date of publication of the minutes of the meeting.
